With a population of just under 15 million, the city is not only one of the most important metropolitan areas in the world, but also a city of contrasts. No other city has such an impressive mix of new and old, modern and traditional, rich and poor. These are the extremes that define this city, and it’s definitely worth getting to know both sides.
Shanghai Landmarks
Waitan Riverfront
The Bun Huangpu Riverfront offers fantastic views of the skyline of Pudong New Area. Many historic European colonial buildings, such as the Custom House, adorn the waterfront and draw attention, especially at night. It is worth noting that at 22:00 on the embankment and Pudong the lights are turned off. So be sure to be there on time.
Pudong
Looking at Pudong’s current skyline, it’s hard to believe there was still a wetland here 25 years ago. Meanwhile, Pudong is Shanghai’s famous cityscape with many skyscrapers (including the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Jin Mao Tower) and is considered a symbol of China’s emerging economic center. The whole area is newly built and walking among the skyscrapers one can feel the incredible progress of Asia. New York City has its own charm too, but Pudong is a bit more modern, more expensive, rougher and even cleaner. Another dimension!
Jin Mao in Shanghai Center
The special shape of this building resembles a huge bottle opener and is very easily recognizable in Pudong. Instead of the touristy popular observation decks on the 94th, 97th and 100th floors (admission up to 180 yuan), it is recommended to visit the bar 100 Century Avenue on the 91st floor. Thus, one can sip a cocktail in peace and quiet and enjoy the magnificent view down to the 468-meter Oriental Pearl Tower or the 420-meter Jin Mao Tower. < /a>
Yu Yuan Garden
This over 400-year-old garden (originally built for a Ming Dynasty officer) is located in the heart of the Old City and is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the metropolis for a while. Traditional buildings, small pavilions, flowers, as well as ponds and lakes are located on an area of ??almost 2 hectares.
Qibao City
Qibao Old Town is close to the city center but very easy to get to by subway. Here, beautiful old streets meet waterways, which offer a short boat ride for a few yuan.
